Cassi for Port Campaign

BRANDING / CAMPAIGN TEMPLATE

2019

Cassi Marshall, Running for Port Commissioner

Kerri Altom, Campaign Manager

Hannah Amundson, Designer

Background

Cassi Marshall is an invested Camas community member that served on the board of a local non-profit Camas Parks and Recreation and created the “Camas Ivy League,” a volunteer-led invasive ivy-removal program. Through encouragement from the community, Cassi decided to run for Port Commissioner of Camas-Washougal to help bring in a fresh perspective, positive energy, and a collaborative spirit while in office. She ran against the incumbent candidate and won.

Campaign Identity

Many explorations were done to lock in the identity for Cassi’s campaign. Since Camas and Washougal is located right along the Columbia river, we explored incorporating a wave graphic and blues and greens. That direction tied very closely to the Port of Camas-Washougal’s current brand identity which could have been strong in connecting the candidate with the Port. However, we gravitated away from this direction and more along who Cassi was and her own identity. Cassi is part Native American from the S’Klallam tribes up in Sequim, Washington, and wanted to incorporate some of the tribe’s colors — reds and turquoise — in her brand identity. We used a geometric sans serif in the logo as a modern type treatment to convey a modern approach. A huge part of a campaign identity is boosting certain words so readers can understand quickly what you’re trying to say (especially with yard signs), so we boosted the size of “Cassi” and “Port” with “for” turned to the side.

Collateral

Collateral included buttons, stickers, business cards, t-shirts, mailers, yard signs, and envelopes to be used throughout the campaign. I also built a website through Wordpress (no longer live) that contained testimonials and went over Cassi’s experience and key issues.

Outcome/Final thoughts

With the backing of the community, Cassi was able to win which secure her as Port Commissioner of Camas-Washougal for the next four years. This campaign was a huge learning opportunity for me and forced me to think outside the box when challenges arose. Creating a brand identity and building assets for a candidate running for office is much different than for a business, which is where a lot of my experience is derived from.

I loved being involved with this campaign — Cassi is an awesome person and I was happy to have a part in her campaign. It was also so cool to see the collateral I created in the community; in windows, on t-shirts, in mailboxes, in yards, and more.
